Visual Inspection

Start by giving a visual inspection and check the overall condition of the entire garage door the tracks, the rollers, the springs, the hinges and the cables. Check for any kind of damage or rust and look for any loose bolts or screws and tighten them if necessary. Then try opening and closing the door with the opener and listen carefully if there is any strange noise.

Test the Door Balance and Auto Reverse Feature

Disconnect the opener and lift the door manually to halfway then check its balance as the door should stay in place now without rising or falling but if it doesn’t it means that the springs may need an adjustment.

Now let’s test the auto reverse feature by placing an object like a piece of wood in the path of the door while it is closing. The door should immediately reverse direction and go up to avoid hitting the piece of wood. If it doesn’t then the auto reverse feature needs adjustments or repair.

Weather Stripping and Seal Inspection

Take a good look at the weather stripping along the bottom of your garage door and the seals around its edges. If any of it is damaged replace it as soon as possible. Inspect the sealant around the door frame for any gaps in order to keep out drafts, water and pests.
